The Philadelphia Flyers secured a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks in a shootout on Monday at the Wells Fargo Center. Despite holding an initial three-goal lead in the second period, the Flyers allowed the Sharks to equalize before claiming victory through a shootout.
Matvei Michkov played a pivotal role for the Flyers with a breakaway goal in the second period and an assist during a power play in the first. Travis Konecny also contributed with a power play goal, while Erik Johnson scored early in even strength. In the shootout, successful attempts by Michkov and Konecny earned their team an additional point.
This win improves Philadelphia's record to 6-8-2 for the season, having secured five out of six points over their last three games. The Sharks now stand at 5-9-3.
The Flyers quickly took a 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the game when Erik Johnson capitalized on an opportunity from Anthony Richard's cross-ice pass during a two-on-one rush. Travis Konecny extended this lead to 2-0 with his eighth goal of the season following precise puck movement during a power play.
San Jose responded by scoring twice to reduce their deficit to one goal before tying it up later in regulation. Barclay Goodrow's third-period goal brought about this tie, leading to overtime and eventually a shootout.
In overtime, Samuel Ersson delivered crucial saves while short-handed due to Michkov's roughing penalty at regulation end. Ersson saved 27 out of 30 shots overall and stopped both attempts faced during the shootout. His counterpart Vitek Vanecek blocked 39 out of 42 shots but conceded two goals during penalties.
The Flyers managed one successful conversion from three power plays while successfully defending against all three penalty kills they faced.
