Phillies shortstop Edmundo Sosa left Friday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals at Citizens Bank Park due to right groin tightness. Sosa, who has been filling in for the injured Trea Turner, exited during the bottom of the seventh inning after showing signs of discomfort earlier in the game.

The team listed Sosa as day to day and said he would undergo further evaluation on Saturday. Manager Rob Thomson commented on the decision to remove Sosa from the game: “I just saw him favor it a little bit while he was on defense,” Thomson said. “So I checked him out and he said, ‘Yeah, it was a little sore,’ so [it is] precautionary for now.”

Sosa’s injury comes shortly after both Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm were placed on the injured list earlier in the week. In response, Otto Kemp was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take over at third base.

After Sosa left Friday’s game, Bryson Stott moved from second base to shortstop and Weston Wilson entered at second base. Stott had gone 2-for-3 with a two-run home run prior to shifting positions. If Sosa misses additional time, Stott is expected to continue at shortstop.

The Phillies have additional options at second base with Wilson and Donovan Walton, who was also recently recalled from Triple-A. Both players are capable of playing shortstop if necessary.
