A Philadelphia detective is under investigation after she allegedly attended a Trump rally in Washington, D.C., ahead of protests and the break-in at the U.S. Capitol.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating if the detective participated in the actual riot or just attended the rally for President Donald Trump.
“We are aware of social media posts that allege that a Philadelphia Police Department detective may have been in attendance at the events on Washington, DC on January 6th,” a statement by the Philadelphia Police Department said, ABC 6 reported. “An IAB investigation has been opened to determine if any PPD policies were violated by the detective, and if they participated in any illegal activities while in attendance. The Detective’s assignment has been changed pending the outcome of the investigation.”
The detective’s name has been withheld but it has been established that authorities are looking into other officers who were in attendance.
The detective in question has however denied any connection to illegal activity on the day, Police Union President John McNesby has since said, adding that “she went somewhere on her day off and that’s her First Amendment right, to legally gather or do whatever they intended to do.”
The investigation currently underway will shed more light on the officer’s participation and if she contravened the law, she faces arrest. A total of 12 people from Pennsylvania State and one from South Jersey have been arrested in connection with the riot. Many police and fire department officials have since opened probes into officers who participated in the Jan. 6 rally.
