J.T. Realmuto, the Philadelphia Phillies’ longtime catcher, is now a free agent after seven seasons with the team. Following the re-signing of designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, the Phillies have shifted their focus to retaining Realmuto. According to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, the club has made an offer to Realmuto, and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski expressed optimism about reaching a new deal.

Realmuto stands out as the top catcher available in this year’s free-agent market. He played 134 games in 2025, including an MLB-leading 132 as catcher. Since joining the Phillies from the Marlins in 2019, he has only landed on the injured list twice outside of COVID-19 protocols—once for a left hand contusion in 2021 and again for right knee surgery in 2024. Realmuto has also participated in every one of Philadelphia’s 38 postseason games since 2022, contributing seven home runs during that span.

Despite entering his age-35 season, Realmuto continues to excel defensively and athletically. His average pop time to second base was tied for an MLB high at 1.86 seconds in 2025, and his +6 Caught Stealing Above Average ranked fourth among catchers. Offensively, he hit double-digit home runs for the eleventh consecutive season and maintained above-average speed for his position.

However, there are signs of decline associated with age. In 2025, most of Realmuto’s hitting metrics dropped compared to previous years; his average bat speed decreased from being well above average in 2024 (73.2 mph) to below average (72.0 mph) in 2025. Behind the plate, his pitch framing numbers were among the lowest for qualifying catchers last season.

Durability remains a concern as few catchers have maintained high workloads into their mid-thirties; only Yadier Molina (in 2017) and A.J. Pierzynski (in 2012) have caught at least 125 games at ages similar to Realmuto’s recent campaign.

If negotiations do not result in a new contract with Realmuto, internal options appear limited for Philadelphia. Backup Rafael Marchan posted a .210 batting average with a .587 OPS last season while veteran Garrett Stubbs saw minimal playing time at catcher and spent most of his year at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The organization’s top catching prospect Caleb Ricketts finished last year at Double-A.

Alternatives on the open market are scarce: Danny Jansen recently signed with Texas on a two-year deal; Victor Caratini lacks experience handling large workloads; Elias Díaz and Christian Vázquez are considered better suited as backups; Adley Rutschman appears unlikely to be traded by Baltimore; and Yainer Diaz offers offensive upside but defensive limitations if acquired via trade from Houston.

The lack of clear replacements may influence both sides’ approach as they negotiate terms that could determine whether Realmuto remains part of Philadelphia’s core moving forward.
