With the regular season nearing its end, the Philadelphia Phillies are facing several key questions as they aim to secure their second consecutive National League East division title and possibly a first-round playoff bye.

Despite being swept by the Mets, the Phillies began Thursday with a four-game lead in their division. Manager Rob Thomson has continued to rotate players across all three outfield positions, moving away from strict platoons. Since acquiring Harrison Bader at the Trade Deadline, the team has posted a 15-9 record, which is tied for the second-best in Major League Baseball during that period.

Bader has started four consecutive games in center field, while Brandon Marsh, Weston Wilson, and Max Kepler have shared time in left field. Kepler has also played right field in place of Nick Castellanos three times over the past 11 games. Thomson commented on this approach: “I think it’s going to be more of a rotation than anything else.” When asked if this would continue through the end of the season, he said, “I can’t tell you that. If three guys get really hot and one guy’s not … “

Thomson noted that defensively, Marsh, Bader and Kepler make up what he considers to be the club’s best outfield alignment.

The starting rotation is another area under consideration as October approaches. While Zack Wheeler remains sidelined, Aaron Nola’s performance over the next month will likely determine how pitchers are deployed in postseason play. Cristopher Sánchez is expected to start Game 1 of any playoff series, with Ranger Suárez returning to form recently and Jesús Luzardo showing strong performances at times. All three are left-handed pitchers; if Nola maintains his level of play into October, he could break up that sequence as a right-hander. This could also allow Luzardo and Taijuan Walker to move into bullpen roles if Philadelphia secures a first-round bye.

Securing that bye remains uncertain due to tough competition and remaining schedules. The two division winners with the best records receive byes for the Wild Card Series. The Brewers currently hold a significant lead for one spot (https://www.mlb.com/standings), while the race for the second involves the Phillies (76-57), Dodgers (77-57), and Padres (75-59). According to FanGraphs (https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds/mlb), Philadelphia has a 23% chance at securing a bye—well behind Los Angeles at 63.8%, with San Diego at 17.9%. The Dodgers’ schedule includes only two series against teams with winning records; meanwhile, both San Diego and Los Angeles face weaker opponents down the stretch compared to Philadelphia’s matchups against top teams like Milwaukee, New York (Mets), Los Angeles (Dodgers), and Kansas City.

Another topic is whether top prospect Andrew Painter will join the roster in September as MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players on Monday. Painter is scheduled to pitch again for Triple-A Lehigh Valley after improving his performance recently—posting a 2.70 ERA over his last two starts following struggles earlier this year. A call-up would give Philadelphia an opportunity to evaluate him further while potentially moving temporarily to a six-man rotation.

As these issues unfold over baseball’s final month of regular-season play, fans can expect ongoing adjustments as Philadelphia seeks postseason success.
