The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Venezuelan outfielder Francisco Renteria, ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect in this year’s international class. This marks the highest-ranked international player the franchise has ever acquired. The Phillies, who play their home games at Citizens Bank Park and represent Philadelphia in Major League Baseball’s National League, reportedly allocated $4 million of their $6,679,200 signing pool to secure Renteria, according to a source. More information about the team and its activities can be found on their official website.
Renteria, a 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter, has drawn comparisons to top prospects such as Konnor Griffin. He will spend his first season in the system as a 17-year-old and is considered to have above-average tools across the board. As a 15-year-old, he played for Senadores de Caracas in the Venezuelan Major League and recorded an .286 batting average over 28 at-bats, including three doubles and hits against former Major League pitchers.
Renteria is recognized for his bat speed and advanced understanding of the strike zone. He is also noted as an above-average runner with defensive range in center field.
The Phillies’ international signings also include shortstop Juan Parra from Venezuela (No. 39 overall), who will receive $550,000 from the club. Parra is described as “a slick fielder and a tenaciously hard worker with plus makeup.” He is expected to remain at shortstop due to his quickness both defensively and on the basepaths. A switch-hitter, Parra shows skill from both sides of the plate but has more experience hitting left-handed.
Right-hander Justin Burgos from the Dominican Republic joins with a reported $300,000 bonus. Burgos stands at 6-foot-5 and features a fastball that reaches up to 93 mph along with an above-average slider and two other pitches.
Recent years have seen successful outcomes for Philadelphia’s international signings. Eduardo Tait became a Top 100 prospect before being traded to Minnesota last season; Aroon Escobar reached Double-A as a 20-year-old after joining in 2022; and pitchers Jean Cabrera, Wen-Hui Pan, and Ramon Marquez are currently among the organization’s Top 30 Prospects.
According to Major League Baseball rules, international players must turn 16 before signing and be registered with MLB in advance. For this period, players born between September 1, 2008, and August 31, 2009 are eligible.
