Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said on May 4 that closer Jhoan Duran is expected to return to the bullpen for Tuesday night’s game. The team plans to activate Duran from the 15-day injured list ahead of their series opener against the Oakland Athletics at Citizens Bank Park.
Duran, who has not pitched since April 11 due to a strained left oblique, was considered for activation on Monday but was given an extra day after reaching 100 mph in a bullpen session on Saturday. Mattingly said Sunday that Duran would not require a rehab assignment. Duran also said he did not think one was necessary.
“Could you hit him at 100? I don’t know,” Mattingly said. Before his injury, Duran had recorded a 1-1 record with a 1.35 ERA and five saves in seven appearances. Since his absence, the Phillies’ bullpen has posted a 4.59 ERA and had only one ninth-inning save opportunity.
Brad Keller earned the save Friday night against Miami by allowing one run in the ninth inning.
