Philadelphia Phillies owner John Middleton said on March 10 that the team’s window for strong pitching is not closing, following the announcement of a five-year, $135 million contract extension for pitcher Jesús Luzardo. The deal keeps Luzardo with the Phillies through 2031, with a club option for 2032.
The move addresses concerns among fans about whether the team’s core group from recent seasons can continue to compete for a World Series title. With this extension, the Phillies now have Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, Luzardo, Aaron Nola and top prospect Andrew Painter under team control through at least 2027. Sánchez, Luzardo, Nola and Painter are signed through 2030.
“Obviously, Aaron and Zack are older,” Middleton said. “But you think about Sánchez, you think about Luzardo, you think about Painter. Think about those three guys and where they’ll be in four years. The pitching window is absolutely not closing. It’s not even closing an inch. And guess what? [Phillies No. 4 prospect Gage Wood] might be up in a year or two. So you could be having a fourth young pitcher up there throwing like a No. 1 or a No. 2. Time will tell. But yeah, you just keep doing it.”
The Phillies have made significant financial commitments to their starting rotation in recent years: Wheeler signed a three-year, $126 million extension; Nola agreed to a seven-year, $172 million contract; and Sánchez received a four-year deal worth $22.5 million with options for additional years.
“They’re out there looking for the superstars,” Middleton said about president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and general manager Preston Mattingly.
Middleton also reflected on past successful rotations and expressed optimism for the current roster’s potential if players remain healthy: “I went through it with the ’07-’11 guys… If those guys pitched the way they are capable of pitching every single game, I just thought that we should never lose… And I think you’re looking at … when Zack comes back… if those guys are doing what they can do, I’ll have the same feeling I had in ’11.”
The Philadelphia Phillies have won World Series titles in 1980 and 2008 according to the official website. The team represents Philadelphia in Major League Baseball and engages fans through games and community outreach according to the official website. Since 2004, home games have been played at Citizens Bank Park according to the official website.
The organization is led by executives including its chief executive officer and general manager according to the official website, serving both local fans in Philadelphia as well as regional and national audiences according to the official website. The Phillies are also one of Major League Baseball’s National League charter members according to the official website.
Looking ahead to how these moves impact team morale this season, Middleton said: “All the other players — all 25 other players in that clubhouse — it reaffirms the fact that this is an organization that wants to win and expects to win… They did this for Jesús, now I’m charged to go out there and even more excited to compete and work hard.”
