PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies have seen several notable Major League Baseball debuts throughout their history, with players making immediate impacts in their first games.

One memorable moment came in 2023 when Weston Wilson hit a home run in his first plate appearance for the Phillies after spending seven seasons and 2,836 plate appearances in the Minor Leagues. This occurred during Michael Lorenzen’s no-hitter against the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it was the first time in American or National League history that a team had both a player homer in his MLB debut and a pitcher throw a no-hitter in the same game.

Reflecting on other significant debuts, Ed Freed set a franchise record on September 11, 1942, with eight total bases during his MLB debut. He went 4-for-5 with two doubles, one triple, an intentional walk, and two runs scored. Freed’s eight bases are tied for seventh most ever in an MLB debut.

Ted Kazanski made his mark on June 25, 1953, going 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBIs against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. His four RBIs remain a franchise record for a player making his MLB debut.

Jimmy Rollins debuted on September 17, 2000. He went 2-for-4 with a triple, stolen base and walk. “It was as much of a blast watching Rollins fly around the bases as it was hearing Harry Kalas make the call.”

Pat Burrell’s highly anticipated debut came on May 24, 2000. As the first overall pick of the 1998 MLB Draft he went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in Houston.

On August 26, 1951 Niles Jordan pitched a three-hit shutout against the Reds at Shibe Park during his MLB debut—the highest Game Score (83) by any Phillies pitcher making their debut according to Baseball Reference.

Brett Myers’ July 24, 2002 debut saw him allow just two hits and one run over eight innings versus the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Myers struck out five batters while walking only one.

Mick Abel outpitched Pirates ace Paul Skenes on May 18, 2025 at Citizens Bank Park during his own MLB debut. Abel pitched six scoreless innings without allowing any walks and struck out nine batters—tying Curt Simmons (1947) for most strikeouts by a Phillies pitcher since at least 1901.

Curt Simmons himself debuted on September 28, 1947 at age eighteen by pitching a five-hit complete game victory over the New York Giants at Shibe Park; he allowed one run while striking out nine batters.

Larry Christenson made his presence felt on April 13,1973 carrying a no-hitter into ninth inning against Mets before giving up five hits and one earned run while striking out three.
