The Philadelphia Phillies are preparing for the 2026 Major League Baseball season with a focus on improving their roster after consecutive eliminations in the National League Division Series. The team is aiming to secure its first World Series title since 2008 by addressing several key areas during the offseason.

A primary objective for the Phillies is to re-sign designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who played a significant role in recent postseason runs and finished second in NL MVP Award voting in 2025. Schwarber hit 56 home runs last season and has averaged nearly 47 home runs per year during his four-year contract with Philadelphia. He has expressed interest in returning, but as of late November, negotiations had not yet resulted in an agreement. “A reunion between Schwarber and the Phillies makes a ton of sense, and there’s no more immediate priority for Philadelphia this offseason than bringing back its star slugger.”

Catcher J.T. Realmuto is also entering free agency, along with left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez. While retaining Suárez may be difficult, keeping Realmuto would address a critical position need for the team.

The outfield is another area requiring attention following Harrison Bader’s move into free agency. With Nick Castellanos expected to leave and Bryce Harper no longer playing outfield regularly, Brandon Marsh remains the only established MLB starter at that position for next year. The Phillies could consider re-signing Bader or Max Kepler or explore other options through trades or free agency. There is speculation about trading third baseman Alec Bohm to acquire additional outfield talent if needed.

Internally, prospects such as Justin Crawford may compete for roster spots during Spring Training, but relying solely on unproven players like Otto Kemp, Weston Wilson, and Johan Rojas carries risks given the team’s championship aspirations.

Improving bullpen performance is also on the agenda after struggles last season contributed to a collective reliever ERA of 4.27—among the highest in Major League Baseball. Offseason acquisition Jordan Romano struggled with an ERA over eight across 49 appearances, while José Alvarado missed significant time due to suspension for violating performance-enhancing substance policies. The return of Jhoan Duran for a full season and retaining other key arms like Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm should help stabilize relief pitching depth.

While pursuing top-tier free-agent relievers appears unlikely due to market constraints, adding reliable bullpen arms remains part of Philadelphia’s strategy as it looks ahead to another postseason push.
