The Philadelphia Phillies made a significant move in the 2026 international signing period by acquiring outfielder Francisco Renteria, who is ranked as the No. 3 prospect in his class. The team signed Renteria for $4 million, drawing considerable attention within the organization.

International scouting director Derrick Chung and senior advisor Sal Agostinelli spoke with MLB Pipeline about their evaluation process and the potential they see in Renteria. Agostinelli described how Carlos Salas, the Phillies’ Latin American coordinator, first alerted him to Renteria’s talent during an open workout in Orlando attended by numerous scouts when Renteria was just 13 or 14 years old. “He was 13 or 14 years old and he really stood out. We all got in there right after that quickly and we went to see him. And progressively, it was evident he was going to be the guy we were really focusing on,” Agostinelli said. He added, “We do our due diligence for the Philadelphia Phillies.”

Chung emphasized that Renteria met all of their criteria for a top prospect: “I think as far as checking boxes, he pretty much checked all the boxes when it comes to makeup, intelligence, the trainer he’s coming from. Not only that but also the body and tools, the athleticism, explosiveness and feel for the game, the ability to make contact, his hand-eye coordination.” He continued, “He checks all the boxes we look for and his intangibles are pretty unbelievable for a kid of his age.”

Discussing where Renteria ranks among other prospects signed by the Phillies over recent years, Agostinelli said: “I think he’s probably one of the best, if not the best, guys in terms of upside in our system now. That being said, he hasn’t played. But when people who know scouting see him…they’re going to say, ‘Wow, this guy has ability.'” He noted that placing young players high on prospect lists can create pressure but believes Renteria fits well among other top talents such as Aidan Miller and Andrew Painter.

Chung echoed these sentiments: “For me, I would say he probably has the best mix of tools that I’ve seen doing this over the years…this is the best mix of tools I’ve ever seen since I started doing this.”

Both Chung and Agostinelli discussed challenges inherent in evaluating international talent at such a young age. Chung pointed out that projecting physical development is particularly difficult: “The hardest thing for us is the physical projection because they change so much from that age.” He stressed gathering comprehensive information from various sources within their organization.

Agostinelli reflected on changes in international scouting practices over time: “There are so many dynamics…You have to go through knowing that you’re going to give him a lot of money — when they get money, a lot of guys change.” He highlighted how important it is today to understand not only a player’s abilities but also their support system and background.

The Phillies’ investment in Renteria reflects broader trends across Major League Baseball as teams place increasing emphasis on identifying and developing international prospects at younger ages.
