The Philadelphia Phillies have secured a postseason berth for the fourth consecutive year after clinching on Sunday, following the San Francisco Giants’ loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team now turns its attention to finalizing its roster and determining playoff seeding as the regular season winds down.

The Phillies’ immediate objective is to secure their second straight National League East title. Their magic number stands at one, meaning they will win the division with either their next victory or a loss by the New York Mets.

As of now, Philadelphia holds a 4 1/2-game lead over the NL West-leading Dodgers for the second and final bye in the National League Wild Card round. They are also two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the top seed in the league. The top two seeds receive a bye past the Wild Card round.

If Philadelphia secures a bye as the No. 2 seed, they would face the winner of a potential Dodgers-Mets matchup in the Division Series. The No. 1 seed would play either Chicago Cubs or San Diego Padres.

The predicted postseason roster includes J.T. Realmuto and Rafael Marchan as catchers; Bryce Harper at first base; Bryson Stott at second; Trea Turner at shortstop; Alec Bohm at third; Edmundo Sosa as an infielder; Brandon Marsh, Harrison Bader, Max Kepler, and Nick Castellanos in outfield roles; Weston Wilson and Otto Kemp as utility players; starting pitchers Cristopher Sánchez, Ranger Suárez, Aaron Nola, and Jesús Luzardo; and nine bullpen arms: Jhoan Duran, Matt Strahm, Orion Kerkering, David Robertson, Tanner Banks, Taijuan Walker, Lou Trivino, Tim Mayza, and Max Lazar.

Rotation plans may shift depending on whether Philadelphia earns a first-round bye. If so, left-hander Cristopher Sánchez is expected to start Game 1 of the Division Series with Ranger Suárez likely pitching Game 2. Aaron Nola’s performance over his remaining starts could determine if he pitches Game 3 or if that spot goes to Jesús Luzardo.

Injuries remain a concern ahead of October baseball:
– Shortstop Trea Turner suffered a right hamstring strain on September 7 but remains optimistic about returning for postseason play.
– Third baseman Alec Bohm is recovering from left shoulder inflammation and could return as soon as September 18.
– Infielder Edmundo Sosa has right groin tightness but may be back by Tuesday.
– Right-handed pitcher Jordan Romano’s status is uncertain due to numbness in his finger and neck stiffness.
– Zack Wheeler will miss the rest of the season following surgery for venous thoracic outlet syndrome scheduled for September 23.
– JosĂ© Alvarado was shut down for a left forearm strain and is ineligible for postseason play because of a PED suspension.

If Turner cannot return by October, Sosa would take over at shortstop provided he is healthy. Otherwise Bryson Stott would move from second base to shortstop with Otto Kemp or Weston Wilson filling in at second.

Harrison Bader has emerged as an everyday center fielder while Brandon Marsh and Max Kepler are expected to handle corner outfield duties against right-handed pitchers. Against lefties Weston Wilson and Nick Castellanos are likely options.

“Both Turner and the Phils are optimistic that he will be back in time for the postseason,” according to team sources regarding Trea Turner’s recovery timeline.

Manager Rob Thomson addressed Jordan Romano’s situation: “His status is up in the air,” but did not rule out his possible return this season.
