Philadelphia Union announced on April 8 that defender Nathan Harriel has signed a new contract, securing his place with the club through the 2028–29 season, with an option for the 2029–30 season. Harriel, who is 24 years old and a member of the United States Men’s National Team, has been part of Philadelphia Union since joining as a homegrown player before the 2021 season.
The signing highlights Harriel’s role as an important figure in the team’s defense. The club features a roster of professional players on its main team, according to the official website.
During his tenure from 2021 to early 2026, Harriel helped lead Philadelphia Union to achieve Major League Soccer’s best record for clean sheets with 59 shutouts and allowed the second fewest goals in that period. He also contributed six goals and six assists over five seasons. In addition to his defensive contributions this year—leading Major League Soccer with 17 interceptions after six matches—Harriel played a key role during last year’s campaign when Philadelphia set a franchise record with twenty wins and finished unbeaten in sixteen out of seventeen home games.
Harriel has shown versatility by playing multiple positions across defense and serving as captain twice this season in matches against Club América during the Concacaf Champions Cup. Internationally, he made his debut for the U.S. men’s national team in three friendlies last year and participated in all four matches at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Looking ahead, both club officials and supporters expect Harriel will continue playing an important leadership role within one of Major League Soccer’s most consistent defensive teams.
