Philadelphia Union announced on Apr. 8 that Homegrown defender Nathan Harriel has signed a new contract, keeping him with the team through the 2028–29 season and including an option for the 2029–30 season.

The move highlights Harriel’s growing importance to the club as both a defensive leader and versatile player. The Philadelphia Union features a roster of professional players on its main team, according to the official website.

Jon Scheer, Philadelphia Union Interim Sporting Director, said, “Nate has established himself as an essential piece of our backline over the past five years. His versatility, competitiveness, and dedication have been vital to the team’s success, and his emergence as a leader both on and off the field has been significant. We look forward to his continued impact and the important role he will play in the years ahead.”

Since joining as a Homegrown player ahead of the 2021 season, Harriel has contributed significantly to Philadelphia’s defense. During his tenure from 2021–26, he helped record an MLS-best 59 clean sheets while conceding only the second-fewest goals in Major League Soccer over that period. He also tallied six goals and six assists across five seasons. Through six matches in 2026, Harriel leads MLS with 17 interceptions and ranks fourth in aerial duels won with 33.

Harriel played a key role during Philadelphia’s Supporters’ Shield run in their franchise-record-setting campaign last year when they went unbeaten in most home matches and allowed only 35 goals. He has captained twice this season against Club América in Concacaf Champions Cup play while featuring at multiple positions across defense.

At international level, Harriel earned his first senior U.S. Men’s National Team call-up in 2025 with appearances against Türkiye, Switzerland, and Japan after being named to the U.S. Olympic roster for all four matches played in Paris during summer competition.

Philadelphia Union functions as a professional soccer team in Major League Soccer focused on representing its city at elite levels while fostering fan involvement along with youth programs and community ties according to their official website (https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/). The club achieved its first Supporters’ Shield for best regular-season performance in Major League Soccer during its history (https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/). Subaru Park serves as their soccer-dedicated stadium located on Chester’s waterfront site along with training facilities (https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/).
