Union Recreational Soccer (URec), an initiative associated with the Philadelphia Union, aims to make soccer more accessible for children in the region. The program addresses several barriers that families often face when trying to get their children involved in organized sports.

According to URec, one significant challenge is finding a location to play. To address this, URec has formed partnerships with various regional soccer clubs that serve as host sites. These clubs allow participation without requiring families to become club members.

URec also seeks to minimize demands on family schedules and budgets by offering sessions only once a week on weekends. There are no weekday practices or travel between fields, and all activities occur at a single site each weekend. Program fees range from $100–$150 per player.

The program eliminates skill-based tryouts and evaluations, allowing any child to participate regardless of experience or ability level. As stated in the release: “With URec, there are none. Every child gets to play, no evaluations, no cuts.”

Participants receive several benefits connected to the Philadelphia Union experience. “Every player gets: A Union-branded jersey Professional coaching from Union trainers Visits from our mascot PHANG! Discounts on additional Union programs And much more…” according to the statement.

“The Philadelphia Union wants everyone to experience the beautiful game for themselves. Soccer is a sport that unites. It brings kids together in a team environment on the field, and it connects families on the sidelines,” the organization said.

Families interested in enrolling can find more information about locations and registration at PhiladelphiaUnionYouth.com.
