Philadelphia Union II secured a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC II on Friday night, overcoming an early deficit to clinch a Top 2 seed in the MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs and guarantee a home playoff match at Subaru Park.
Toronto FC II took the lead in the first half after being awarded a penalty kick. Mark Fisher converted from the spot, putting the Canadian side ahead. Stas Korzeniowski responded for Union II just before halftime, scoring his seventh goal of the season and continuing his strong form with four goals in his last three matches.
Union II completed their comeback late in the game when center back Oscar Benitez scored his first goal for the club with a header from a CJ Olney corner kick in the 84th minute. The win not only secured crucial points but also set a new single-season points record for Union II.
Both teams entered the match needing three points to strengthen their postseason positions. With this result, Philadelphia Union II enters the final day of the regular season tied atop the Eastern Conference with New York Red Bulls. To secure first place, Union II must earn more points than their rivals as they face New York City FC II at Subaru Park on the last matchday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., with coverage available on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
Head Coach Ryan Richter fielded five MLS-signed players in his starting lineup against Toronto FC II. Goalkeeper George Marks started alongside defenders Oscar Benitez and Rafael Uzcategui at center back, while Giovanny Sequera and Jordan Griffin played outside back roles. The midfield featured CJ Olney and team captain Nick Pariano, with Kellan LeBlanc returning to join Markus Anderson. Sal Olivas and Stas Korzeniowski led the attack.
Throughout the match, Toronto pressed early but were denied by key saves from Marks and defensive efforts from Olney. In response to tactical needs during the second half, Richter made several substitutions, bringing on young professionals Willyam Ferreira and Malik Jakupovic as well as academy amateur Jamir Johnson to bolster Union II’s offense.
After securing this win, Philadelphia Union II will look to claim sole possession of first place in their conference as they host New York City FC II at Subaru Park.
