J. Milo Sewards, MD, Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, spoke with PhillyVoice about hyperbaric oxygen therapy as Philadelphia sports teams expand its use for injury management and recovery. The Phillies have recently adopted this therapy, joining the Eagles and Flyers in exploring its potential benefits.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy requires individuals to enter a sealed chamber where they breathe pure oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. This method is being used by some athletes for injury recovery and general wellness.
Sewards emphasized that more peer-reviewed research is necessary to fully understand the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on athletic injuries, overall wellness, and anti-aging. “More peer-reviewed research is needed on its effects and use for athletic injuries, wellness and anti-aging,” Sewards told PhillyVoice.
