The University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team began its 2025 season with a decisive 5-0 victory over Mount St. Mary’s at Rhodes Field on Sunday night. This marks the second consecutive year that Penn has started its season with a win and the third straight year the team has opened with a shutout.
Penn outshot Mount St. Mary’s 19-4 and took all seven corner kicks during the match. Senior Mallory Lucas scored the first goal in the 40th minute, her fourth career goal and first since early in the 2023 season. Junior Abbey Cook added a second goal less than four minutes into the second half, marking her sixth career tally.
Freshman Lauren Stevens, playing in her first college match, scored her inaugural collegiate goal late in the game to make it 3-0. Junior Mia Fuss contributed Penn’s fourth goal, which was her second for the Quakers after previously scoring against Cornell in 2023. Sophomore Leigha Matter netted her first collegiate goal in the final minute of play.
Senior goalkeeper Annabel Austen played the entire match and recorded two saves for her sixth shutout at Penn.
The Quakers controlled play from the start, registering nine shots to none for Mount St. Mary’s in the opening half. Despite several early chances from Avery Chapel, Lucas, and Magali Capdevila, it was not until late in the half that Lucas converted a free kick just outside the box to open scoring.
Early in the second half, Hailey Adamsky’s effort led to Cook’s goal after she capitalized on a deflection near the left post. With just under 13 minutes remaining, Capdevila set up Stevens for Penn’s third goal with an assist also credited to Kylie Emanuel.
Fuss extended Penn’s lead with an individual effort in the 86th minute before Matter closed out scoring by curling a shot from outside the box over goalkeeper Anna Joyce and under the crossbar following an assist from Zula Root.
Mount St. Mary’s fell to 0-3-0 after playing their third consecutive road game this season.
