The University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team lost its first match of the season to Villanova, 3-1, on Sunday night at Rhodes Field in Philadelphia. This result ended Penn’s undefeated start and brought their record to 4-1-2. Villanova improved to 5-3 with the win.

This loss marks the best start in terms of fewest losses for Penn since the 2022 season. Junior Mia Fuss scored her second goal of the year, setting a new career high in both goals and points early in the season. Sophomore Lily White and freshman Lauren Stevens started for Penn, making them the 17th and 18th unique starters for the team this season.

The game began with neither side taking control early on. Penn had two corner kicks but could not convert them into goals. At the 22nd minute, Villanova was awarded a penalty kick that was saved by Penn’s junior goalkeeper Megan Graves.

Villanova opened scoring at the 32nd minute when freshman Avrie Nelson found the net with her right foot. Three minutes later, senior Mallory Lucas set up Mia Fuss for an equalizer, bringing Penn level.

Villanova responded quickly, scoring twice more within two minutes. Avrie Nelson added her second goal at the 35th minute, followed by Morgan Kotch assisting on a goal at the 37th minute after receiving a throw-in from Olivia Neal.

In the second half, both teams created offensive chances but did not add to their totals. Penn outshot Villanova 10-4 during this period but could not reduce the deficit.

Penn will begin Ivy League play on Friday against Princeton at Rhodes Field.
