The University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team lost to Brown University in a double-overtime contest, 77-65, in Providence, Rhode Island. With this result, Penn’s record dropped to 10-5 overall and 0-2 in Ivy League play. Brown improved its record to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in conference games.

Brown outrebounded Penn by a margin of 55 to 45. The Quakers recorded eight steals during the game, while Brown registered ten blocked shots. There were four lead changes and five ties throughout the matchup.

Penn forced 18 turnovers from Brown, converting those into 15 points. Mataya Gayle led Penn in scoring with 18 points. For Brown, Grace Arnolie was the top scorer with 24 points. Katie Collins contributed a double-double for Penn with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Simone Sawyer added ten points and Saniah Caldwell scored sixteen for the Quakers. Three players—Gayle (49 minutes), Collins (48 minutes), and Caldwell (43 minutes)—played more than forty minutes each.

Penn struggled offensively at the start, missing its first five field goal attempts as Brown took an early lead. After a five-minute scoring drought for Penn, Gayle scored their first basket with a layup off a steal. Brown continued to build on its advantage through inside play and free throws.

By halftime, Penn had narrowed the deficit to four points after an eight-point run late in the second quarter brought the score to 28-24 in favor of Brown.

In the second half, Penn improved offensively but was unable to overcome Brown’s consistent responses to each rally attempt. The teams remained close through regulation time.

With both teams tied at the end of regulation after key baskets by Sawyer and Gayle, the game moved into overtime. In extra time, both teams exchanged leads until Brown secured victory by outscoring Penn by twelve points in the second overtime period.

Penn will return home next weekend for two games: hosting Harvard on Saturday and Dartmouth on Monday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day). Both games are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
