The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team finished seventh with 26 team points at the Ivy League Championship, according to a May 17 announcement. The event took place in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
The highlight for Penn was the Third Varsity Eight (3V8) crew earning a bronze medal with a time of 6:41.7. In other races, both the First Varsity Eight (1V8) and Second Varsity Eight (2V8) crews won their B Finals against Cornell, recording times of 6:28.3 and 6:38.1 respectively. The Varsity Fours placed sixth with a time of 7:15.8.
Head coach Bill Manning said, “This weekend Penn had mixed results at the Ivy League Championships. Our youth led the way with the 3V winning a well-deserved bronze medal open water ahead of fourth place.” Manning also commented on other performances: “In their A Final the A4+ raced courageously with the front of the field for 1500 meters before fading at the end. Both boats developed significantly over the course of the spring season, with many athletes rotating through the line-ups, thanks to their efforts and the coaching of Coach Allyson Baker and Coach Josie Konopka.” He continued, “Saturday the 2V stumbled badly in the Heat which placed them in the B Final. They won this race today leading from the first stroke and finishing over fourteen seconds of the next crew. A great rebound after a disappointing first race. The 1V also struggled in a quick Heat then showed more poise today winning their B Final by open water too.”
Results from Sunday show Brown taking first in Third Varsity Eights followed by Yale and Penn; Yale won Varsity Fours; while Penn defeated Cornell in both Second Varsity Eights and Varsity Eights B Finals.
The conclusion marks an end to Penn’s spring championship season as they look ahead to future competitions.
