The University of Pennsylvania women’s volleyball team concluded its participation in the Charm City Classic at Towson’s SECU Arena on Saturday, splitting two matches. The Quakers began the day with a 3-0 victory over Lafayette before falling to host Towson, 3-1.
Against Lafayette, Penn secured set wins of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-20. In the match against Towson, the set scores were 25-21, 25-17, 18-25, and 27-25 in favor of the Tigers.
Following these results, Penn holds a season record of 3-3. Lafayette ended the day at 2-8 overall. Towson improved to 9-2 and extended its winning streak to nine matches.
Several Penn players recorded notable performances during the tournament. Sophomore Jenna Garner achieved a career-high with 19 kills and added eight digs against Lafayette. She also contributed 11 digs in the match versus Towson. Senior Feyi Ogunlari posted a personal best with 14 kills against Lafayette and led Penn with another 11 kills against Towson. Ogunlari finished the day hitting .279 across both matches.
Sophomore Ellie Siskin recorded a double-double in the win over Lafayette with 10 kills and 13 digs and followed up with nine kills against Towson. Senior Anna Shohfi played setter throughout the match versus Lafayette, tallying 39 assists along with two kills and twelve digs. Sophomore Emery Moore handled setting duties in the second match and registered 43 assists and seven digs.
Senior Claire Deller made her first start since late last season, leading Penn with four block assists against Lafayette while adding two kills and four digs. In the matchup with Towson, junior Zada Sanger had ten error-free kills for a .303 hitting percentage; sophomore Adell Murray also had ten kills with only one error (.429) and two solo blocks.
Freshman Haley Kerstetter contributed seven error-free kills on fourteen attacks for a .500 hitting percentage in the nightcap versus Towson. Freshman libero Addison Pollock continued to lead defensively for Penn, recording twenty-five digs against Lafayette and twenty-two more versus Towson.
In their win over Lafayette, Penn used key runs in each set to secure victory after overcoming early deficits or ties. Against Towson, despite trailing through much of each set except for their third-set win (25-18), Penn was unable to complete a comeback in a closely contested fourth set that ended at 27-25 for Towson.
Penn will next play its home opener on Wednesday night when it hosts NJIT at The Palestra at 7 p.m.
