The University of Pennsylvania women’s volleyball team is set to compete in a series of matches in Maryland this weekend. The Quakers, who began their season on the West Coast, will face Coppin State in Baltimore on Friday before heading to Towson for games against Lafayette and Towson on Saturday.
Friday’s match against Coppin State will be available to stream live on ESPN+, while Saturday’s game against Towson can be watched on FloSports. Penn’s home games and select road matches are accessible through ESPN+, a subscription service offering both monthly and yearly packages.
Penn holds a 1-2 record all-time against Coppin State, with the Eagles winning the last two encounters. Against Lafayette, Penn has won 15 out of 17 meetings but lost their most recent match-up. The upcoming game with Towson marks only the second meeting between the two programs; Towson won the first contest in 2015.
This season marks Tyler Hagstrom’s first as head coach for Penn after he was hired in July. He previously coached at Bucknell, where he achieved a program-best win percentage over five seasons and led the team to a 21-5 record last year.
Last season under former head coach Meredith Schamun, who left for an associate head coaching position at Illinois, Penn improved significantly, finishing with a 13-10 overall record and a .500 mark in Ivy League play. The team returns nearly all its core players from last year, including high percentages of kills, blocks, digs, and service aces.
Sophomores Jenna Garner and Adell Murray were recognized for their performances at UC Irvine’s Anteater Classic last week by being named to the all-tournament team. Junior Zada Sanger led offensively with 30 kills during that tournament stretch.
The Quakers’ roster includes several players from California who had an opportunity to play close to home during last week’s tournament at UC Irvine. Freshmen Haley Kerstetter and Addison Pollock made notable contributions in their collegiate debuts.
Three returning players have received All-Ivy recognition: Sanger and Murray were honored after last season, while Abigail Reid earned recognition following her freshman year in 2022. Last year’s squad also saw three different players earn Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors.
Penn was selected fifth in this year’s Ivy League preseason media poll behind Yale, Princeton, Brown, and Cornell. The Quakers opened their current campaign with two wins out of three matches at UC Irvine’s tournament.
The team has not yet announced captains for the current season. For updates on Penn volleyball, fans can follow @PennVolleyball on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram or visit PennAthletics.com.
