Penn track athletes post top Ivy League marks at Penn Select meet

The University of Pennsylvania hosted the Penn Select meet on Saturday, where its track and field athletes posted strong performances in several events.

Freshman Tiago Socarras recorded a time of 4:04.50 in the men’s mile, which currently leads the Ivy League and is the 19th fastest time in the NCAA this season. Socarras finished second in the race. He was followed by teammates Liam Going (third, 4:06.25), Kofi Fordjour (fourth, 4:08.71), and Vinay Raman (fifth, 4:09.75).

In the women’s mile, L’Mio Edwards placed third with a time of 4:51.89 and was the top collegiate finisher. Nia Akins won that event with a meet record of 4:43.32.

Anna Weirich secured first place in the women’s 3000m with a time of 9:42.62, marking the fastest performance so far this season within the Ivy League. Kyra Compton finished second at 9:49.66 and Sarah Fischer took third at 9:49.87.

In sprint events, freshman Carson Edwards ran 6.86 seconds to finish second in the men’s 60m final while Daniella Oyenuga claimed third place in the women’s 60m with a time of 7:67 seconds. Sean Golembiewski continued his form by finishing second in the men’s 60m hurdles at 8:31 seconds.

On the field side, Colton Dean made his season debut in pole vault by clearing a height of 5.05 meters (16’6.75″), earning him third place and ranking him second among Ivy League competitors this season.

Evangeline Thomson won her second meet of the season by clearing 3.92 meters (12’10.25″) in women’s pole vault.

Stella Inman achieved victory in the women’s weight throw with a mark of 18.70 meters (61’4.25″) during her fifth attempt; Ella Neskora came second with a distance of 17.73 meters (58’2″).

Senior Angel Asaah took third place in women’s shot put after recording a throw of 14.85 meters (48’8.75″).

The Quakers are scheduled to compete again on January 17 when they host the Quaker Invitational at Jane and David Ott Center for Track and Field.
