The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team lost its first away game of the season to Mansfield, with a final score of 15-9. The match took place Saturday night in Mansfield, Pennsylvania.
Mansfield secured the win with a fourth-quarter touchdown and a successful two-point conversion. With this result, Penn’s record drops to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in CSFL South play.
Jason Sheairs was the main contributor on offense for Penn, scoring the team’s only touchdown and recording eight receptions for 143 yards. Quarterback Jaxson Nield completed 15 out of 30 passes for a total of 176 yards. On defense, Marcus Butler and Colin Cross each made eight tackles, with Butler achieving a career-high in solo stops. Josh Johnson added an interception that he returned for 24 yards.
The game began with Penn’s offense attempting to establish momentum, but Mansfield intercepted Nield late in the first quarter and turned it into an early lead. The Quaker defense responded by ending the quarter with consecutive sacks.
In the second quarter, Grant Coulson recorded his first sack before Johnson intercepted a pass on the next drive. Nield then connected several times with Sheairs, including a catch at the two-yard line followed by a touchdown pass to Sheairs. However, Ezra Granet missed the extra point attempt, leaving Penn trailing by one point at halftime.
After halftime, Xavier May IV sacked Mansfield’s quarterback on their opening possession. Penn moved ahead briefly after Granet converted a field goal midway through the third quarter. Despite strong defensive efforts—including another near-interception from Butler—Penn’s offense struggled as Nield threw another interception late in the third quarter.
Mansfield capitalized on turnovers in the fourth quarter, scoring a rushing touchdown and converting for two points to take a six-point lead with under eight minutes remaining. Although Sheairs helped move Penn into scoring position again late in the game, Mansfield’s defense stopped them on fourth down and maintained control until time expired.
Penn will look to rebound when they return home to Franklin Field on Friday, October 3rd to face St. Thomas Aquinas at 7 p.m.
