The University of Pennsylvania softball team will host Cornell University for a three-game series at Penn Park beginning March 28. The weekend will also include recognition of the 1981 Ivy League Championship team and Senior Day celebrations on Sunday afternoon.
This matchup is significant as both teams are competing within the Ivy League, with Penn entering the weekend holding an overall record of 11-12 and a conference record of 2-1, while Cornell stands at 9-11 overall and 2-4 in league play. These games provide an opportunity for both teams to improve their standings in the conference.
Penn’s all-time record against Cornell is currently at 45 wins and 52 losses. In last year’s series, Cornell won two out of three games, though Penn secured a victory in the final game with a score of 5-2. The Quakers’ most recent series win over Cornell came in 2024 when they took two out of three games.
Key players for Penn include Jade Montgomery, who has posted a .313 batting average with seven doubles, four home runs, and an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of 1.006 this season. Gigi Ganje leads the Ivy League with nine stolen bases so far this year. Delaney Smith ranks second in the league in batting average at .478 over her first 67 at-bats.
Cornell enters after recent wins over several opponents including Bucknell, whom they defeated by a score of 10-2 in five innings during their last outing. Lauren Holt leads not only her team but also the Ivy League with a .507 batting average, along with leading marks in slugging percentage (1.017) and OPS (1.620). On the pitching side, Madalyn Covelli and Mila Fiordalisi have recorded similar strikeout totals this season.
The weekend’s events are expected to bring together alumni from past championship teams alongside current players as both programs look to make strides within Ivy League competition.
