Liam O’Brien, quarterback for the University of Pennsylvania football team, has been named a finalist for the Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award. The announcement was made by Stats Perform, which recognizes one student-athlete from each Division I conference as a finalist.
The Doris Robinson Award honors Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in athletics, academics, and community involvement. The award is named after Doris Robinson, a former schoolteacher and the wife of Grambling State University’s longtime coach Eddie Robinson.
O’Brien is majoring in Finance and Business Analytics at Penn’s Wharton School of Business. He spent last summer working as an Investment Banking Analyst at J.P. Morgan and received a full-time job offer from the company. O’Brien is also active in several campus organizations, including the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the Penn Athletics Wharton Leadership Academy, and the Ivy League Football Council. He was previously a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy.
In addition to his academic and athletic achievements, O’Brien has participated in community service through Uplifting Athletes and Penn Football’s annual Get in the Game Bone Marrow Drive with NMDP.
On the field this season, O’Brien has passed for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns with a completion rate of 76 percent. He has also rushed for 517 yards and scored seven rushing touchdowns. Heading into the final weekend of play, he ranks second in the Ivy League in completion percentage, completions per game (21), and passing touchdowns (17). He is third in both passing yards and passing yards per game (237), fifth in total rushing yards (517), sixth in rushing yards per carry (4.20), and sixth in rushing yards per game (57.4). O’Brien holds single-game program records for total touchdowns (7) and passing touchdowns (6).
The winner of the Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award will be announced on December 9 and honored at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Show on January 3 in Nashville, Tennessee. Other awards to be presented at that event include honors for offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year, freshman player of the year, coach of the year, and HBCU national player of the year.
