The University of Pennsylvania baseball team lost to Saint Joseph’s by a score of 8-2 in the Liberty Bell Classic championship game at Citizens Bank Park, according to an April 21 announcement. The defeat leaves Penn with a record of 15-19 for the season while Saint Joseph’s improved to 26-13.

The Liberty Bell Classic is an annual event that brings together local college baseball teams. The result matters for both teams as it marks another milestone in their seasons and gives athletes a chance to compete on a larger stage.

Freshman Jack Warner led Penn’s offense with two hits and one run batted in. Gavin Degnan contributed with a home run, driving in Penn’s second run during the fourth inning. Senior infielder Ryan Taylor also made history by stealing his 26th base of the season, breaking Doug Glanville’s single-season record set in 1989. Taylor is now the all-time leader for career stolen bases at Penn with 68.

Nine different pitchers took the mound for Penn during the game, including Thomas Egbert and Aidan von Zuben who each pitched two innings. Despite efforts from players like Ben Moulin—who recorded two strikeouts—the Hawks pulled ahead with timely hitting and added insurance runs late in the contest.

Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball competes at the NCAA Division I level as part of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Pennsylvania according to the official website. The team maintains membership in the Ivy League and hosts its home games at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium according to university sources.

Looking ahead, Penn will play a three-game series against Harvard beginning Saturday as they seek to rebound from this loss.
