Penn Quakers baseball falls to East Carolina in extra innings, 8-7

The University of Pennsylvania baseball team lost an extra-inning game to East Carolina by a score of 8-7 on March 15 at Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

This matchup was the second time this season that the Penn Quakers went into extra innings. The loss brings their record to 3-10, while East Carolina improves to 12-8-1. Ryan Taylor led Penn’s offense with a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run, a double, two runs scored, and two walks. Junior catcher Qwynn Ahearn contributed three runs batted in with a three-run homer during the third inning. Gavin Degnan added his third home run of the season with a two-run shot in the eighth inning that temporarily gave Penn a lead.

Freshman Nick Newburn took his first loss of the year despite allowing only one hit during his inning on the mound. Other contributors included Jay Secretarski, Nick Spaventa, Gavin Collins, Jack Warner, and Michael Powell who each recorded hits for Penn. The Quakers’ home field is Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium, as reported by the official website.

The game saw several lead changes. After falling behind early, Penn surged ahead in the third inning before East Carolina responded with home runs of their own. In extra innings, Michael Kalinich hit a walk-off home run for East Carolina to end the contest.

Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball competes at the NCAA Division I level and maintains membership in the Ivy League as part of its intercollegiate athletics program at the University of Pennsylvania according to information from their official website. The team will return home for its next game against Lehigh Mountain Hawks at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
