The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team lost to 18th-ranked Stanford in the first round of the NCAA Championship on May 2, with a final score of 4-1.
This match marked the end of Penn’s season, which concluded with an overall record of 18 wins and 10 losses under Head Coach Rich Bonfiglio. The team started strong by winning the doubles point, giving them an early lead before Stanford took control during singles play.
Manfredi Graziani and Aaron Sandler capped off their doubles season undefeated at 20-0 after defeating Stanford’s Alex Chang and Alexander Razeghi. Shaurya Bharadwaj and Nischal Spurling also secured a win in doubles after coming back from an early deficit. Despite these efforts, Stanford won four consecutive singles matches to clinch victory.
Graziani and fellow senior captain Matthew Rutter finished their Penn careers with unfinished three-set singles matches that were left incomplete as the overall match was decided. The Quakers’ results included notable performances against nationally ranked opponents throughout both doubles and singles competition.
Looking ahead, Penn will seek to build on this year’s achievements as it prepares for future seasons.
