Penn men’s tennis opens spring with back-to-back wins over Navy

The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team began its spring season with two victories against Navy at the Hecht Tennis Center in Philadelphia on January 18, 2026.

In the first match, Penn secured all three doubles matches, gaining an early lead. Manfredi Graziani and Aaron Sandler started the day with a 6-0 win over Legaspi and Buckingham. Vojtech Vales and Shaurya Bharadwaj followed with another sweep, defeating Ayinala and Etterbeek. Matthew Rutter and Parashar Bharadwaj completed the doubles round for Penn by winning 6-3 against Kim and Cutone.

Graziani went on to defeat Herrick Legaspi (6-4, 6-2) in singles play. Matthew Rutter earned his first singles victory of the season over Jeffery Etterbeek (6-1, 6-0). Justin Chung, Nischal Spurling, and Stephan Gershfeld also picked up wins in their respective matches. Aaron Sandler finished the singles round by beating George Cutone (6-4, 6-2), helping Penn complete a 7-0 sweep in the opening match.

In the second match of the doubleheader, Penn won two out of three doubles matches to take another early lead. Freshmen Vojtech Vales, Nischal Spurling, and Adam Bain each recorded their first singles wins of the season as Penn extended its advantage. Luka Butera and Shaurya Bharadwaj added final singles victories to secure a 6-1 win for Penn.
