Penn men’s tennis defeats Liberty Flames with strong singles performances

The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team secured a 6-1 victory over Liberty at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Friday evening. This result brings the Quakers’ season record to 3-1.

After suffering their first loss of the year to Arkansas, Penn responded with a strong performance against Liberty. Senior Matthew Rutter led the team with a commanding straight-set win, conceding only one game in his match. Teammates Shaurya Bharadwaj and freshman Vojtech Vales also won their singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles play, the pair of Manfredi Graziani and Edoardo Sandler recorded a 6-3 win, marking their fourth consecutive victory and maintaining an undefeated start to the spring season. The duo of Parashar Bharadwaj and Matthew Rutter also contributed with a win, improving their doubles record to 2-1.

The match results were as follows:

Doubles:
Graziani/Sandler (Penn) defeated Roothman/Auytayakul (Liberty) 6-3.
Ekpenyong/Sparks (Liberty) defeated S.Bharadwaj/Vales (Penn) 6-3.
Rutter/P.Bharadwaj (Penn) defeated Arraez/Vorwerk (Liberty) 6-4.

Singles:
Manfredi Graziani (Penn) defeated R Santiago Arraez (Liberty) 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Carl Roothman (Liberty) defeated Luke Butera (Penn) 6-4, 6-4.
Shaurya Bharadwaj (Penn) defeated David Ekpenyong (Liberty) 6-3, 6-4.
Justin Chung (Penn) defeated Benjamin Sparks (Liberty) 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Vojtech Vales (Penn) defeated Chase Robinson (Liberty) 6-4, 6-4.
Matthew Rutter (Penn) defeated Ernst Gouws (Liberty) 6-0, 6-1.

The order of finish for doubles was courts two, one, and three; for singles it was courts six, three, five, two, four, and one.

“Senior Matthew Rutter delivered the most dominant performance of the day, dropping only a single game across his straight-set win,” according to the release. “Shaurya Bharadwaj and freshman Vojtech Vales also took care of business in the minimum amount of sets.”

“Manfredi & Graziani earned a win, 6-3. This is the duos’ fourth win of the new year, remaining undefeated to start to the spring season,” said team officials. “Parashar Bharadwaj and Matthew Rutter also got it done, bringing their doubles record to 2-1 on the young campaign.”
