The University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team defeated La Salle with a score of 175-114 on Thursday evening at Sheerr Pool in Philadelphia. This victory brings the Quakers’ season record to 5-5, while the Explorers remain winless at 0-5.
The meet featured 16 events, with Penn winning ten. Senior James Curreri and sophomore Max Malakhovets each won two individual events for the Quakers. Curreri placed first in both the 100-yard backstroke (48.65 seconds) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:43.47). Malakhovets secured victories in the 100-yard butterfly (48.81 seconds) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.51).
Other individual event winners for Penn included Robert Melsom in the 1000-yard freestyle, Watson Nguyen in the 100-yard breaststroke, Can John Yeniay in the 200-yard butterfly, Eddie Jin in the 50-yard freestyle, Neo Matsuyama in the 200-yard breaststroke, and Henry Guo in the 500-yard freestyle.
Penn also saw success in relay events, with their ‘A’ team—comprised of Eddie Jin, Watson Nguyen, Alex Fu, and Liam Campbell—winning the men’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:27.41.
In recent competitions, Penn has won four out of its last five meets and has scored at least 169.5 points in all four victories.
Following this win against La Salle, Penn will compete again tomorrow as they travel to West Chester for a dual meet.
