The University of Pennsylvania men’s squash team is set to face Drexel University on Wednesday, December 3, at the Penn Squash Center in Philadelphia. The match will determine the winner of the Pennsylvania State Classic championship.
Both teams enter the contest undefeated this season. Penn holds a 5-0 record and is currently ranked No. 1 nationally. Their most recent victory was against No. 4 Virginia, with a score of 7-2. So far this season, Penn has swept four out of five opponents and has an overall individual match record of 51-2.
Senior captain Omar Hafez has won all four of his matches playing in the first position. Junior Salman Khalil is also undefeated, with three wins in both the second and third positions. Freshman Will Newman shares a team-leading four wins with Hafez, Zane Patel, and Jat Tse. Senior Rehan Luthra recently achieved a comeback win against Virginia’s Cavaliers after trailing by one game.
If Penn secures a win over Drexel, they will be named champions of the Pennsylvania State Classic.
Drexel comes into the match ranked No. 6 nationally with a 4-0 record after moving up two spots in the College Squash Association’s rankings following their recent victory over Princeton. Guido Lindner contributed significantly to that win with straight-game victories against Princeton’s Avi Agarwal and Chatham’s Sebastian Vaca Sanchez. Freshman Nico Serna has also started strong for Drexel, earning two wins from the top spot in their lineup.
The match is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
