The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team, ranked 20th nationally, will conclude its regular season on Friday, April 24, with a non-conference game against the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The matchup is set for Farmingdale High School in New York at 5:30 p.m.
The outcome of this game does not directly affect Penn’s chances for an Ivy League Tournament berth. Instead, the team’s fate will be determined by two other games taking place on Saturday: Harvard at Cornell and Yale at Brown. For Penn to secure a spot in the tournament, both Harvard and Brown must win their respective matches; otherwise, Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale will advance.
This meeting marks only the second time Penn has faced UMass in men’s lacrosse. Their first encounter was during the opening round of the 1987 NCAA Championship when Penn won 11-10 at Franklin Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Pelot was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after recording 14 saves—including three in overtime—during last week’s victory over Brown that kept Penn’s tournament hopes alive. Junior Anthony McMullan received Preseason All-America honorable mention from Inside Lacrosse for a second consecutive year and was again recognized midseason. Senior Griffin Scane also earned preseason honorable mention honors from both USA Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse.
Penn’s schedule this year has been notable for its difficulty under new head coach Taylor Wray. The team played seven games against squads ranked in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Top 20 poll and four more against teams receiving votes.
Looking ahead to Friday’s game and Saturday’s results elsewhere in the league, senior Alex Martin leads recent scoring efforts while junior Davis Provost continues as top scorer overall with goals or points in every game this season. The Quakers have relied on contributions across their roster as they aim to extend their postseason run.
