The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team, ranked twentieth nationally, secured a 13-11 victory against the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Apr. 24 in Farmingdale, New York. The win marks the end of Penn’s regular season with a record of seven wins and six losses, while UMass falls to ten wins and five losses.
This result is significant as it concludes Penn’s regular season campaign and leaves the team awaiting outcomes from other Ivy League matches to determine their postseason fate.
Junior Davis Provost led Penn with career highs in both assists (three) and points (six), also scoring three goals for his seventh hat trick this year. Grayson McClements contributed two goals and an assist, achieving his second consecutive three-point game. Ben Beacham added a goal and two assists for his eighth multi-point performance this season. Senior Alex Martin scored twice, continuing his recent streak with nine points over the last three games—the first points of his collegiate career.
Other contributors included Griffin Scane, who returned to scoring after being held without a goal in the previous two games; Jackson Maher; Anthony McMullan; Travis Smith; and sophomore Paul vanBastelaar, who netted his first collegiate goal. Freshman Quinn Ball excelled at faceoffs with a .714 win rate (20-8), while Dante Vardaro led defensively with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sophomore goalie Jack Pelot made ten saves during the match.
The game saw slow scoring early on before Penn surged ahead in the second quarter to build a strong lead. UMass responded but could not close the gap as Penn maintained control through key plays by multiple athletes.
Looking ahead, Penn will monitor results from upcoming Ivy League games between Harvard at Cornell and Yale at Brown to see if they qualify for postseason play. The team’s progression depends on specific outcomes from these matches.
