The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team secured a 12-11 victory over Brown in double overtime on April 18, keeping its postseason chances intact. The game-winning goal came from Nate Lucchesi, who scored with just over two minutes left in the second extra period.
This win is significant for Penn as it maintains their eligibility for the Ivy League Tournament. The team now awaits results from upcoming games, specifically needing Brown to defeat Yale next weekend to improve their own tournament prospects.
During the match, sophomore goalie Jack Pelot made three crucial saves in overtime and totaled 14 saves for the day. Freshman Quinn Ball won 16 out of 22 faceoffs, helping Penn recover after initially losing eight of the first ten draws. Senior Alex Martin recorded his first collegiate hat trick and contributed four points overall, while junior Grayson McClements also notched his first hat trick at Penn.
Junior Davis Provost continued his streak as the only Quaker to score a goal and record a point in every game this season. Other notable performances included Ben Beacham and Jackson Maher each scoring once and assisting once, along with “pole goals” by Dante Vardaro and captain Ryan McLaughlin.
The match saw momentum swings throughout regulation. After trailing early, Penn tied the score at halftime and took its first lead during the third quarter. Despite building an 11-7 advantage in the fourth quarter, Penn allowed Brown to come back and force overtime following several turnovers under pressure.
Looking ahead, Penn will conclude its regular season against UMass next Friday at a neutral site in Farmingdale, New York.
