The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team is set to play two matches this weekend, hosting No. 20 Brown on Friday at Ellen Vagelos Field and facing Villanova on Sunday in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
Penn, with a record of 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Ivy League play, will meet Brown (6-3, 2-1 Ivy League) at home where the Quakers have maintained a perfect 2-0 record this season. Historically, Penn leads the series against Brown with 34 wins, nine losses, and three draws. The Quakers had won 12 consecutive games against the Bears before losing 4-3 last season in Providence.
Head coach Colleen Fink’s squad comes into Friday’s match after a loss to No. 4 Harvard last Saturday, where Philine Klas scored Penn’s only goal and goalkeeper Ruby de Frees recorded eight saves. De Frees has accumulated 44 saves this season and ranks 25th nationally in saves per game. Julia Ryan currently leads Penn in both goals (five) and points (11).
Brown arrives in Philadelphia on a five-game winning streak, most recently defeating Maine 1-0. Senior Lexi Pellegrino leads the Bears with eight goals and 19 points this season, ranking among the top 25 nationally in both categories. The Bears have outscored their opponents 26-11 so far and have posted four shutouts.
On Sunday, Penn will face Villanova for the 40th time in program history. The Quakers hold a narrow edge in the series with a 20-18-2 record but have lost their last three encounters with the Wildcats, including a 5-1 defeat at home last year. Villanova enters the match with a 4-7 overall record and is 2-1 in Big East play. The Wildcats recently defeated Georgetown 5-0 before falling to American 3-0.
Villanova’s offense is led by graduate student Ava Borkowski and junior Colleen Finnan, who have six and four goals respectively. Freshman goalkeeper Sophie Volkel has made 40 saves this season.
