The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team secured a 2-0 victory over American University on Sunday in College Park, Maryland. Senior players Julia Ryan and Livia Loozen scored the goals that led Penn to its second win of the season, bringing their record to 2-2. The Eagles fell to 1-4.
This match marked Penn’s first shutout of the season and its first since defeating Dartmouth 3-0 in October 2024. Loozen scored her first goal of the year, while Ryan tallied her third goal of the season, having found the net in three out of four games so far.
Penn led American in shots taken (15-9) and shots on goal (7-4). Philine Klas had a team-high four shots, with both Loozen and Ryan contributing three each. Ryan also led her teammates with two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Ruby de Frees made four saves during the game, including three key stops in the third quarter to help secure her first shutout this year. Penalty corners were evenly matched at six for each team.
Head Coach Scott Tupper achieved his second collegiate coaching win with this result. Tupper previously served as associate head coach at Maryland before joining Penn.
During the opening quarter, neither side managed to score as both teams combined for only four shots. The scoring opened when Loozen converted off an assist from Honor Roberts, putting Penn ahead 1-0. At halftime, Penn held a slight edge in shots and goals on target.
De Frees kept American from responding by saving all three shots faced in the third quarter. Later, Ryan extended Penn’s lead with a goal assisted by Loozen before heading into the final period.
The last quarter saw no change to the scoreline as Penn maintained its two-goal advantage until full time.
Next, Penn will begin Ivy League play against Princeton on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by their home opener versus Drexel on Sunday at noon.
