The University of Pennsylvania baseball team earned a series win over Columbia after sweeping a Saturday doubleheader, according to an April 4 announcement. The Quakers improved their conference record to 5-4 and now hold a 10-15 overall mark, while Columbia fell to 6-18.
This result is significant as it marks Penn’s continued pursuit in the Ivy League standings. The victories were highlighted by strong pitching performances from Marty Coyne and Thomas Shurtleff, who led the team to wins of 9-5 and 9-8 on the road.
In Game 1, Penn recorded a season-high of 15 hits, with Jarrett Pokrovsky and Gavin Degnan each contributing three hits. Nick Spaventa and Degnan both hit home runs during the game. Michael Powell delivered the winning run with a two-RBI double in the eighth inning. Junior pitcher Coyne entered in relief during the third inning and did not allow any hits over his next six-plus innings while striking out four batters.
Game 2 saw Gavin Collins hit a grand slam in the third inning, giving Penn an early lead. Spaventa homered for his third consecutive game in New York. Shurtleff secured his third win of the season by pitching nearly seven innings in relief, recording four strikeouts while throwing more than one hundred pitches.
