Penn baseball sweeps Harvard doubleheader, strengthens Ivy League position

The University of Pennsylvania baseball team secured two wins against Harvard on April 25, claiming victories of 13-7 and 10-2 at O’Donnell Field. The Quakers tallied a total of 28 hits over the doubleheader and improved their Ivy League record to 11 wins this season.

These results are significant as they move Penn closer to a postseason berth in the Ivy League, with the team now holding a 17-19 overall record while Harvard drops to 8-24. Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball competes at the NCAA Division I level as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s intercollegiate athletics program, according to the official website.

Gavin Collins led Penn’s offense in Game 1 with three hits and four runs batted in, including a two-run home run in the ninth inning. Junior Gavin Degnan contributed two hits and three RBI during that game. Marty Coyne recorded his fifth win on the mound for Penn with five strikeouts. In Game 2, Degnan added three more hits and hit his sixth home run of the season. Nick Spaventa also homered for his seventh of the year, giving him sole possession of the team’s home run lead.

Senior co-captain Thomas Shurtleff pitched seven innings out of the bullpen in Game 2, matching his career-high with ten strikeouts while allowing only four hits. “The QuakeShow now looks to complete the series sweep on Sunday, as they return to O’Donnell Field at 12 p.m. to close out the weekend,” said team representatives.

Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball maintains membership in both NCAA Division I and Ivy League competition according to its official website. The team hosts its home games at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
