The University of Pennsylvania baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Yale on Mar. 29 at George H.W. Bush ’48 Field, with the Bulldogs winning 4-0 in the first game and securing a 3-2 victory in extra innings during the second matchup.

The results leave Penn with a record of 7-14 overall, while Yale improves to 13-8 this season. The losses mark another challenging weekend for the Quakers as they continue their NCAA Division I campaign.

In Game 1, Penn managed only two hits, recorded by Nick Spaventa and Ernie Echevarria. Junior pitcher Marty Coyne threw six innings and struck out five but was handed his third loss of the year. Josh Katz provided two relief innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Yale’s Daniel Cohen pitched a complete game shutout for his second win of the season.

Game 2 saw Penn collect five hits from Gavin Degnan, Spaventa, Nick Guachione, and Jack Warner—who had two hits including an RBI single that tied the score early on. Degnan gave Penn a brief lead after scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. Senior co-captain Thomas Shurtleff delivered an extended outing with over eight frames pitched and four strikeouts while limiting Yale to two runs before being relieved late in the contest. Echevarria caught two base runners stealing during Game 2, bringing his total to nine successful throwdowns this season—a figure tied for second place among Ivy League catchers.

Yale scored twice late: once in the ninth inning to tie it up after an RBI double by Bryce Miller and again in extra innings when Colin Sloan drove home Garrett Larsen for the walk-off win.
