The University of Pennsylvania announced on May 14 that nine members of its men’s baseball team have received All-Ivy honors following the conclusion of the regular season. Senior co-captain Thomas Shurtleff and junior outfielder Gavin Degnan were named unanimous first-team selections, highlighting a strong showing for the Quakers.
These recognitions underscore Penn’s depth and performance during the year, as five players made the first team, two earned second-team status, and two received honorable mentions. Shurtleff was also selected as Penn’s Academic All-Ivy representative. The awards come as the Quakers prepare to compete in the Ivy League Tournament.
Degnan led his team in several offensive categories including hits (49), batting average (.304), RBIs (40), doubles (12), total bases (86), and slugging percentage (.534). He finished second in home runs with seven and maintained a perfect fielding percentage in center field. Shurtleff was one of only three pitchers to reach five wins during conference play without recording a loss, posting a 2.20 ERA over 41 innings pitched.
Other first-team honorees included Ernie Echevarria, who had a breakout year both offensively and defensively behind the plate; Jarrett Pokrovsky, who secured his second straight first-team selection after moving primarily to right field; and Jack Warner, recognized for his performance as designated hitter. Second-team honors went to Nick Spaventa and Jay Secretarski for their consistent contributions throughout all games played this season.
Marty Coyne and Ryan Taylor rounded out Penn’s honorees with honorable mention status. Taylor set new program records for stolen bases both in a career and single season while tying another record for triples. The Red and Blue will enter postseason play seeking their third Ivy League title in four seasons at Yale’s George H.W. Bush ’48 Field.
Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball competes at the NCAA Division I level within intercollegiate athletics as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s program, maintains membership in the Ivy League, and hosts home games at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium according to the official website.
