Nayyir Newash-Campbell broke the program record in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 45.98 at the Sam Howell Invitational, held April 4 in Princeton, New Jersey.
The performance by Newash-Campbell now ranks him nineteenth nationally in the event. His achievement was one of several notable results for Penn athletes during the meet.
In other events, Shane Gardner set a new meet record in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 13.81 and earning a twentieth national ranking. Ryan Matulonis finished second in that race with a time of 14.33. On the women’s side, Jailyn Milord won the 100 meters at 11.65 seconds, placing her fourth on Penn’s all-time performance list.
Rianna Floyd captured first place in the women’s 200 meters with a personal best of 23.57 seconds, also fourth all-time at Penn. In field events, Madison Knier won the javelin throw with a personal-best mark of 47.60 meters (156’2″), which is now fourth best in program history. Ella Neskora achieved a personal best and moved into Penn’s record book for her hammer throw mark of 53.93 meters (176’11”).
Other top finishes included Ijeoma Eziri taking second place in the women’s triple jump and Takunda Mhete finishing second in the men’s long jump. The men’s team also performed strongly in distance events: Joey Ruiz led Penn to dominate the men’s five thousand meters by finishing first at fourteen minutes thirty point zero nine seconds; teammates Raghav Gopalakrishnan, Shane Murphy, and Kofi Fordjour followed closely behind to round out third through fifth places respectively.
These results contributed to several athletes achieving or improving their standings within Penn’s track and field program records.
