Nathan Harriel reached a significant milestone for the Philadelphia Union on April 27, becoming the first Homegrown player in club history to start 100 Major League Soccer matches. The achievement came just two days after his 25th birthday, as he appeared in the starting lineup for the tenth time in the current season.

Harriel’s accomplishment highlights the club’s emphasis on developing talent through its academy system. His journey began in 2019 when Jon Scheer recruited him from Clearwater Chargers in Florida. Harriel had initially committed to play college soccer at Clemson University but chose instead to finish high school at YSC Academy and pursue a professional path with Philadelphia Union.

“I’m truly blessed for everything I’ve achieved so far in my career. I never would have imagined that this would happen if you told me when I was a 15 or 16-year-old kid back home. I’m just really grateful,” Harriel said.

Since signing his first team contract in January 2021 as the club’s thirteenth Homegrown player, Harriel has contributed significantly both on and off the field. He played key roles during an Eastern Conference Championship run, represented both club and country at the Paris Olympics, and logged over two thousand minutes during this season’s Supporters’ Shield-winning campaign. So far this year, he has started every league match and provided one goal along with two assists.

While still young, Harriel is now seen as a veteran leader within the squad, having served as captain during Champions Cup matches against Club América. In April, he signed a contract extension that keeps him with Philadelphia through at least the end of the decade. “It’s really special to be at one club for such a long time. I’m not from Philadelphia originally, but this is almost like a second home,” Harriel said.

Philadelphia Union operates as a professional soccer team within Major League Soccer and maintains strong ties with fans through youth programs and community involvement according to its official website. The organization features Subaru Park as its home stadium along with training facilities according to its official website. The roster consists of professional players competing at an elite level according to its official website, while providing entertainment through matches and events according to its official website.
