Kyle Schwarber made history on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park by becoming the 21st player in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a single game. His performance helped lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 19-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
Schwarber is now the fourth player in Phillies history to accomplish this feat, joining Mike Schmidt (April 17, 1976), Chuck Klein (July 10, 1936), and Ed Delahanty (July 13, 1896). He started his night with a solo home run in the first inning, followed by a two-run homer in the third, a three-run shot in the fifth, and completed his four-homer game with another three-run blast in the seventh inning.
His nine runs batted in set a new franchise record for the Phillies. The previous record of eight RBIs was held by Jayson Werth (May 16, 2008), Mike Schmidt (April 17, 1976), Willie Jones (Aug. 20, 1958), and Gavy Cravath (Aug. 8, 1915).
The accomplishment comes during a season that has seen an unprecedented number of four-homer games. Earlier this year, Eugenio Suárez hit four home runs for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Braves on April 26, and Nick Kurtz achieved it for the Oakland Athletics on July 25.
With his four home runs on Thursday, Schwarber’s season total rose to 49. This marks a career high for him and places him second on the Phillies’ all-time single-season home run list behind Ryan Howard’s record of 58 homers set in 2006.
