Trey Yesavage, considered the third-best pitcher in the 2024 MLB Draft behind Chase Burns and Hagen Smith, made a significant impact for the Toronto Blue Jays after being selected 20th overall. Despite concerns about his back, Yesavage joined the Blue Jays in September and contributed to their postseason run, helping them come within two outs of a World Series title. He set rookie records for strikeouts in both a World Series game and throughout the postseason.
The rapid rise of Yesavage from draft pick to playoff standout is unusual. Looking ahead to 2026, MLB Pipeline has identified several prospects who could potentially follow a similar path. Among these is Gage Wood, a right-handed pitcher drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies at No. 26 overall. Wood delivered what was described as “the best performance in CWS history,” throwing a 19-strikeout no-hitter against Murray State, with only a hit batter preventing a perfect game. Although he has dealt with shoulder issues that sidelined him for two months last spring, Wood features a mid-90s fastball that can reach 98 mph and an effective power curveball.
Other prospects mentioned include Kade Anderson (Mariners), Kyson Witherspoon (Red Sox), Liam Doyle (Cardinals), Andrew Fischer (Brewers), Jamie Arnold (Athletics), and A.J. Russell (Rangers). Each brings distinct strengths and could make quick progress through the minor leagues depending on team needs and individual health.
Wood’s combination of high-velocity pitching and strong college performance places him among those closely watched as potential breakout players for next season.
