The Philadelphia Flyers have traded goaltender Ivan Fedotov to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
This move addresses the team’s crowded goaltending situation. Last season, the Flyers managed three goalies for much of their schedule. The recent signing of Dan Vladar added further competition, making it likely that Samuel Ersson and Vladar will serve as the primary NHL goalies unless injuries occur. Aleksei Kolosov now moves up as third on the depth chart, while Carson Bjarnason is expected to start his professional career with Lehigh Valley as Kolosov’s backup. The departures of Cal Petersen, Parker Gahagen, and now Fedotov from both the Flyers and their AHL affiliate since last season clear space for these changes.
Fedotov is entering the final year of his contract with an average annual value of $3.275 million. Had he been sent to Lehigh Valley after clearing waivers, only about $1.1 million would have come off Philadelphia’s salary cap due to league rules. With Columbus taking on Fedotov’s contract, the Flyers gain more flexibility under the cap ceiling.
Flyers President of Hockey Operations Keith Jones commented last week that he is not ruling out either Fedotov or Kolosov as future NHL roster candidates over the next year. However, when discussions began with Columbus, “the Flyers had an opportunity to help their cap situation and alleviate the numbers game at the same time.” The trade also offers Fedotov a new opportunity following what was described as a challenging stint in Philadelphia but marked by his commitment and adaptability.
Fedotov will compete for playing time with Columbus after improving his English skills significantly during his time with Philadelphia.
