The 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase concluded in Minneapolis on Saturday, featuring exhibition games between prospects from Team USA, Team Canada, Team Sweden, and Team Finland. The event serves as a preparation for the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship, with players aiming to secure spots on their respective national teams.
Jack Berglund, selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, was among those participating. Berglund had previously made Sweden’s squad for last year’s World Juniors but missed the tournament due to a hand injury sustained in a pre-tournament game. During the 2024-25 season, he played at Sweden’s top professional level, splitting time between the SHL and Allsvenskan.
Berglund’s inclusion on Sweden’s roster for this year’s showcase was expected. However, his performance during the round-robin games drew attention. Known as a physically strong center with defensive reliability and puck-battling skills, Berglund demonstrated an improved offensive game at this event.
“In five games played, Berglund racked up seven points (four goals, three assists). He scored two even strength tallies and a pair of power play goals. This included a glove-side snipe from the right circle against USA Blue in the opener. In the finale against arch-rival Finland, Berglund got Sweden on the board with a power play goal at 13:55 of the first period, as he re-directed a pass from Melvin Fernström. Two of his other goals came off rebounds or scrambles close to the net.”
Berglund also displayed competitiveness throughout the showcase and was involved in several physical exchanges during Sweden’s win over Team USA. The Swedish team finished with four wins and one loss after remaining unbeaten until their final game.
Another Flyers prospect who performed well was Finnish center Heikki Ruohonen. Committed to Harvard University and already experienced at last year’s World Juniors for Finland, Ruohonen contributed five points (one goal and four assists) across five games at this year’s showcase.
“Ruohonen, who played well for Team Finland at last year’s World Junior Championship, finished the 2025 Showcase with five points (1g, 4a) in five games. His goal came in the finale against Sweden, opening the scoring in that game. He often found himself on the ice matched head-to-head with Berglund.”
Both players’ performances will be closely watched ahead of final roster decisions for their national teams leading into next season’s international competitions.
