Top Philadelphia Flyers prospect Porter Martone signed his entry-level contract on March 30 and could make his National Hockey League debut as early as Tuesday, according to general manager Daniel Briere. Martone, the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, joined the team at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday evening to watch part of the game against Dallas and was present in the locker room after a 2-1 overtime win.
Martone’s arrival is seen as significant for both the player and organization as he transitions from collegiate hockey to professional play. The Flyers compete as a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League, providing entertainment through games and community outreach initiatives, according to their official website.
Briere said, “It’s exciting for the organization to have them sign and join our team coming down the stretch here, where we’re playing meaningful games. Give them the chance to be around that. See how those guys prepare, what it’s like, how the intensity is, playing meaningful games, and we’ll see where it goes.” He added that while paperwork and a medical exam remain before Martone can play, there is hope he will be ready soon: “We’re not closing down the window for Tuesday… We’re hopeful that Tuesday could be the game, but we’ll see. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself right now.”
Martone recently finished his freshman season at Michigan State with 25 goals and 50 points in just 35 games. He also captained Team Canada at this year’s World Junior Championships with six goals and nine points in seven games. His experience includes appearances at both junior levels internationally and competition against older players—a background which Briere says helps him adjust physically: “That was the biggest reason for encouraging the move to NCAA this season; physically to have a kind of a stepping step from OHL to NHL… you can see in his body how it’s changed.” Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet commented on Martone’s style by saying: “I’m not going to put the tag on him, but somebody’s talking about… a Corey Perry type of guy… we’re excited to have a guy like that.”
The Flyers operate under National Hockey League structure according to their official website, offering professional ice hockey competition alongside support for community programs such as cancer awareness efforts according to their official website. They are known for historic moments including defenseman Tom Bladon’s eight-point game during an 11-1 victory over Cleveland Barons on Dec. 11, 1977 according to their official website.
Briere cautioned fans not expect immediate stardom from Martone: “We’re not expecting Porter to come in and be a savior… For us … given him [the] chance … grow … get experience of playing some meaningful games down stretch.” The organization plans gradual integration into lineup responsibilities rather than immediate high-pressure roles.
Looking forward, observers anticipate Martone will use this opportunity with Philadelphia—both through practice time with teammates and potential early-game action—to adapt further before taking on larger roles within one of professional ice hockey’s established franchises.
